History – The First Year

Society Foundation - Extracted from The Wallasey News - Sat 19th March, 1904

It is indeed surprising that many of the residents of Wallasey who’s spare time is occupied by following the art of
photography have not long since resolved themselves into a society for the encouragement of this interesting practice. This
question has received the attention of Mr. William Hayes of Seacombe, and he eventually decided to do what he could to
bring the idea prominently before the lovers of the art. Accordingly a meeting was held on Tuesday evening, the result of
which has been to inaugurate the Wallasey Amateur Photographic Society.

Officers were elected to serve for a period of three months. Mr. J. S. Jones was appointed president, Mr. William Hayes
vice-president and secretary, Mr. Chatham treasurer, and a suitable committee was also elected.

There is no reason why this society should not make rapid strides, for the district affords ample scope for such an
organisation. The society will meet on alternate Tuesday evenings, the next meeting taking place on the 29th inst. All
communications respecting the society should be addressed to Mr. William Hayes, 110, Brighton Street, Seacombe.

It may be mentioned that no person under the age of 18 is eligible for membership.

The fortnightly meeting of the Wallasey Amateur Photographic Society took place on Tuesday evening at 110 Brighton
street, Seacombe. The earlier part of the evening was occupied with an interesting lecture on “The use of lens stops” by
Mr W. Hayes (vice president and secretary). Mr Hayes dealt exhaustively with this subject and the lecture was most
instructive. The collection views of the district of Wirral was also discussed and it was decided to commence the survey
about the beginning of June. At the next meeting of the society a demonstration of the platinotype process will be given.

The Wallasey Amateur Photographic Society held their usual fortnightly meeting on Tuesday last at 110, Brighton street,
Seacombe, when Mr W. Hayes gave a demonstration of bromide toning with potassium chloro-platinite. The tones
obtained were a rich brown, very pleasing to the taste and artistic in effect. Some splendid photographs were exhibited by
Mr G. Tyrer, showing the beautiful sepia tones to be obtained on self-toning papers by simply fixing and washing the
prints.

The next meeting of the Wallasey Amateur Photographic Society will be held next Tuesday evening, when the subject of
lantern slides will be treated by Mr J.S. Jones. Arrangements are being made for a series of lantern lectures and illustrated
tours of great
photographic interest, to carry the Society through the winter season. There seems to be every prospect of a continuous
supply of pleasant educational evening and members are particularly advised not to miss them.

The Wallasey Amateur Photographic Society had a very pleasant evening on Tuesday last, when they were entertained by a
very interesting lecture entitled “A Trip to the Continent”. The lantern slides, which numbered 200, were by first class
workers and of a very high order. The members found the lecture very enjoyable and much satisfaction was expressed
with the exhibition.
The lecture was read by Mr G. Tyrer and the manipulation of the lantern entrusted to the hon. Secretary Mr W. Hayes,
both of whom performed their duties satisfactorily.
